Safi and her family have been part of the Lab community since 2011, and she has held a variety of volunteer positions over the years, including serving on the Lab PA Board as a member of the Middle School Council. Prior to her kids joining Lab, Safi volunteered at their previous school in many capacities including serving as an advanced math teacher for 3rd ad 5th grade. Safi has always enjoyed being part of the school community that her kids attend and believes that parent involvement plays a very important role in what makes a great school. Safi is honored to serve the Lab community in a leadership capacity and hopes to contribute her skills and time to the school that her children have grown to love.
Sari attended Lab from Kindergarten through high school and lived across the street from Lab. Sari and her husband, Brody, have a 4th grade daughter and a 1st grade son; both started Lab in N3. Sari and Brody like to call themselves the least hip people in Bridgeport. Their mini schnauzer, Thor, may be the hippest dog in Bridgeport. Sari’s favorite activities are waterskiing, sailing, hiking, talking to people and forcing myself to do things that scare me.
Saima Abedin Sufi
Saima is from all over the world. She was born in Pakistan, but grew up in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It was then off to the University of Toronto before arriving in the United States in 2003. She has taught math at both the Winsor School and Walnut Hill in Boston, Massachusetts, and she has continued math education through tutoring Lab students and volunteering in Ms. Rochester’s first grade class. She is the proud mother of three Lab children (N3, 1st grade, and 4th grade).
Middle School Council
Tracy has two kids at Lab: Jason in 8th grade, and Lilly in 6th grade. Tracy has served on the LS Council, and as Co-President of the PA. In addition to her work on the P.A. Board, she has co-chaired Grandparents Day, co-chaired the Lab Arts Expo, coordinated the art exhibits at Connections, helped organize Rites of May, and served as a volunteer for many other school wide events. Prior to having children, Tracy taught 3rd grade in CPS and earned a Masters in Education. Tracy’s husband is a Lab alumnus. They live in Hyde Park.
Yvette is a mother to two Labbies – Claire in sixth grade and Andrew in fourth. She’s new to the PA this year but has volunteered as a tour guide, at school, for many years. In addition, she also volunteers her time on the Development Board of Comer Children’s Hospital and at the Museum of Contemporary Art as a docent. Yvette lives in Lincoln Park and spends the summer in Martha’s Vineyard where she owns and operates a seasonal business – Vineyard Bath Co. In her spare time, she enjoys playing tennis, bridge, reading and spending time with her husband David, their children and puppy, Itty Bitty.
Amanda has three children at Lab: a daughter in 6th grade, a daughter in 3rd grade, and a son in N4. Amanda served on the N/K Council in 2009-11, and enjoyed the opportunity to meet other parents, and learn more about the school. Amanda and her family live in Hyde Park, where she works for the University of Chicago Urban Labs. Her hobbies are cooking, running on the lake, and anything else that gets her outside.
Karen has been a Lab parent for 12 years and has four children at Lab: 11th, 10th, 8th and 5th grade. Her Lab volunteer positions have included room parent, parent advisory coordinator, new family mentor, organizer of 7th grade roller skating party, leadership roles for Connections and 5 years on the Development Committee. Outside of Lab, she is a member of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation Women’s Board. MBA ‘91 U of C Graduate School of Business. Karen and her family live in Lincoln Park. In her free time Karen enjoys paddle tennis, golf and tennis.
Leny has been a Lab parent for two years. She has two children at Lab, a 4th grader and a Kindergartner. Leny and her family moved to Chicago eight years ago from Vancouver, Canada. They live in Hyde Park.
Lower School Council
Cathy has a third grade daughter, Karis and a kindergarten son, Carson. Her husband, Mike, works for the Orthopedic Department at the University of Chicago. Cathy and her family relocated from Seattle and joined Lab in 2014. After meeting new friends and volunteering for many school events, she decided to become actively involved in the Parent Association by serving on the Lower School Council. Cathy grew up in California’s bay area and have lived in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Cleveland and Seattle before moving the Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood. She and her family love living in the Prairie District where they have easy access to the museums, parks, soldier field and the lakeside.
