Middle School 101: P.A. supported events

MS 101 – PA Supported Events

Wondering how to feel more connected to Lab? Unclear about community-building events for you and your middle schooler? The Middle School Parents ’Association (PA) representatives (MS Council) have put together this overview of MS Council supported events and opportunities for involvement.  Please check the school calendar, E-News, or the Middle School section of the PA website for new information and updates.

New Student/Parent Orientation

Wednesday, August 28 from 9 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the Middle School

The Middle School hosts an informative and very helpful orientation for any new Middle School students 6-8, including all students entering grade 6. Students will be able to pick up IDs, tour the building, move into their lockers, and get to know faculty, staff, and the MS student ambassadors.

Back-to-School Night

Thursday, September 5th from 5 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in Gordon Parks Arts Hall

The Middle School will host an evening opportunity for parents and guardians to attend their child’s classes. Light dinner will be provided by the Parent’s Association between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in the Gordon Parks Hall Lobby. Introductory remarks from Principal Sandy Bixby will begin at 5:35 p.m. in the Gordon Parks Assembly Hall.

Fan Days
Dates TBD

The MS Council partners with the MS student ambassadors and student government to sponsor fan days at various sporting events to build community and cheer the Maroons to victory! Snacks and school spirit swag included.

Giant Gym Nights
Dates TBD

PA sponsored and organized Giant Gym Nights are grade 6-8 Middle School events where Lab’s gymnasiums are opened up for a night of fun, supervised by Lab’s PE staff!  The Council will communicate details and sign-up information in the Fall. We will also be looking for parent volunteers to keep track of kids entering and exiting the party. (This is a nice opportunity to participate in the life of the Middle School.)

Grade-Level Parties

Dates TBD

The PA sponsors and supports grade-level parties that are largely organized and planned by Middle School student government representatives.

Principal Program
Dates TBD
Periodically, principal Sandy Bixby hosts forums for parents to engage with her and other Middle School staff on relevant issues or in open discussion.  Past topics include social media, the humanities curriculum, and the MS schedule. To suggest a topic for an upcoming chat, please email one of the members of the MS Council.

MS Counselor Coffee

Standing Time TBD

Each month, Sylvia Aschliman hosts a coffee for Middle School parents and guardians.  The purpose of the gathering is to increase connection between home and school regarding social and emotional care of our middle schoolers and their families.

Parent-to-Parent Meetings

Third Thursday of each month 8:15 a.m. – 9 a.m. in Judd C103

To support our parent community the Middle School Council organizes an ongoing opportunity to meet other Middle School parents along with a MS counselor to share, problem solve, and support one another.

Grade-Level Transition Nights for Parents

Dates TBD

In coordination with the MS administration’s transition nights (6th to 7th, and 7th to 8th), the PA provides an opportunity for parents to socialize over a light dinner before the programs start.

Middle School Graduation

Dates TBD

Eighth grade students participate in a series of memorable events around graduation, many of which are sponsored and supported by the PA. Middle school parents who volunteer for these events have a great time and see the students shine from behind the scenes.

If you have questions about the activities of the Parents’ Association or about other ways to get involved at Lab, please visit our website at www.labparents.org or be in touch with one of us.
