Welcome, from the P.A.

Welcome to the 2017-2018 School Year! On behalf of the University of Chicago Laboratory School Parents’ Association (PA), we are so pleased to welcome you to this amazing community. Every parent or guardian is a member of the Parents’ Association, which is led by an elected board of volunteers. Events and initiatives of the PA are also supported by hundreds of additional parent volunteers each year.

On the landing page of Lab’s Back to School website, you will find information about Schoology, PowerSchool, and E-News, the three main ways Lab communicates with parents. The PA also uses the biweekly E-News, as well as our website labparents.org to let parents know about events and topics of interest. Please visit our site, and check the biweekly E-News to keep up to date on the latest events and initiatives, as well as to find out about opportunities to volunteer and engage. Many parents also find the “Lab Moms and Dads” page on Facebook a good place to find out more about Lab and its families. For an overview on how Lab relays information to parents and guardians, please read the How Lab Communicates document.

Each of the PA Councils (Earl Shapiro Hall, Lower School, Middle School, High School) has been working through the summer on the mentor program, orientation events, and Parent Nights. The first weeks of school are filled with excitement and questions, and the Councils do an incredible job helping to transmit information to parents. We encourage you to look carefully at Lab’s Back to School site and to attend your child’s/children’s orientation events, but if you still have questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to your Council representatives.

The PA is always eager to connect with new and returning parents who would like to volunteer to enrich the Lab community, in any number of ways. To find out about volunteer opportunities, we encourage you to attend this year’s Volunteer Fair at Earl Shapiro Hall on September 8 from 8-9 am. Immediately following that is the Room Parent Orientation, which will be an informative event for anyone considering volunteering as a room parent. Volunteering at Lab offers many benefits to individual volunteers—the chance to better understand and strengthen school culture, the opportunity to meet new parents, time to see your children and their teachers in their daily action—and also to our community.

If you would like to start the year showing your Lab pride, please click on Lab Spiritwear to purchase t-shirts, hoodies, tote bags, and more! Available to purchase for a limited time only.

As Co-Presidents of this year’s Parents Association, we look forward to meeting you, and to a very exciting year of growth and development for children, families, teachers, classes, and the whole Lab community.
